Happy, Healthy Me!

Happy, Healthy Me! is the Signature Project for the Junior League of Topeka. The focus of this program is a multi-year, multi-faceted initiative to improve children’s self-esteem through working to promote wellness.

The three components of this program are:

  • Education
  • Volunteering
  • Funding

EDUCATION: League members are involved at an informative level. JLT hosted a Community Forum in April 2006. The forum's goal was to initiate a dialogue among community leaders about the growing problem of childhood obesity, identify existing community efforts to combat it and pinpoint potential resources gaps within the community.

VOLUNTEERING: League members are involved at a personal level.  Volunteers will serve as mentors to children working to improve their nutrition, self-esteem and level of physical activity.  The two programs JLT has chosen to partner with are:  the Family Service and Guidance Center – Get Moving program and The Capper Foundation – On the Ball for Fitness program.

FUNDING: League members are involved at a financial level. JLT will be contributing financial resources to help start The Capper Foundation – On the Ball for Fitness program. This donation will pay for a physical therapist, registered dietician and purchase fitness equipment and supplies.

In the future, JLT may try to create or bring new childhood obesity programs and events to fill gaps in our community resources and meet this growing need.
